Well it’s been an age since i wrote anything -and as I’ve said before and as we all know life happens!!!!
I have been extremely lucky and recently managed two amazing holidays.
The first one was – fab company, fab food and lots of drink. Only complaint it was all too short and wish we had more time in each place but from London to Paris to Barcelona to Gibraltar (my favourite) to Madrid (my second favourite) back to Paris then London. Was a whirlwind tour but worth it all and would definitely do a similar thing again.
Even for all the food and drink I only put on a few pounds and to be honest didn’t really think about it. To be honest we did do a lot of walking which probably helped!!
Secondly a trip to Poland , Krakow to be exact – again fab company – lots of food and beer!!! Again not the healthiest but the walking helped.
And back to reality, back to work and it has taken a couple of more weeks even after the holiday to get back into going to the gym. I think being on holiday has gone to show that you have to enjoy yourself and not think too much about the day to day routine.
Then before you know it we are at Christmas – more food and drink. Then when we get to ~January, a lot of people make their ‘New Year Resolutions”. Think I said last year – Welcome to another year…..– I don’t do them as most folk never stick to them (especially me!!!) – that’s why there is a rush at the gym in January and then folk get fed up and it gets slightly quieter again!!!!! I would never knock anyone for trying to get a bit fitter and we all have to start somewhere and sometimes it takes a few attempts for you to feel that the gym or reviewing your life choices is for you. I have now been on this road for 2 years and I am still learning, at times still very much struggling – but then isn’t that just life?
I realised I started this blog when I first turned 60 so have been adding little bits for the past 2 years – I am not sure how long I will keep this going – might stop after this or see where I am at the start of another year. And as another year goes by, a couple of things which I read recently resonated with me – “we spend anything from 30 to 50 years of working and then only between 10 and 20 years of being free of work and having days to ourselves” – and “better to be the oldest in the gym than the youngest in the retirement home” – both of these made me think about where I currently am. I suppose for me it is that I want to enjoy my “free time” and to be fit and healthy enough to enjoy it (fate permitting!!!!) without depriving myself of the things I like. Everyone has different ideas about their age and what that means to them and how they want to take that forward
As Dick Van Dyke (from Mary Poppins if you don’t know who he is and he has just turned 99) said – “Why is it amazing that I don’t act my age? Why should I act my age? Or more to the point, how is someone my age supposed to act?”
Hope you have a lovely Christmas and New Year, whatever you do but I hope you can be with the people you love.
