And so….into a new year

Hopefully you have managed to enjoy the festive season in whatever form but hopefully you were able to spend it with either friends or family or both. I don’t know about you but I already feel it was an age ago – we are already at the end of January!!

So most of us are back to some form of normality (whatever that is!!!!). Did you make a new year resolution?? If you managed to read my last post you will have read that I don’t think making a resolution is realistic for most folk to stick to – not everyone of course, the start of a new year can be what some folk need to make that change in their lives (whatever that is), however for the vast majority of us it’s not always sustainable. I’m back at the gym but the Christmas and New Year food and drink has taken its toll……but I’m not letting that put me off, as I’ve said before it’s the persistence of keeping going.

I started off the end of last year with a challenge in mind to try and do pull ups – this is a massive task for me but it is a work in progress and after discussion with Jodie I need to get a full 2 minutes dead hang – although I have to say with the weather, the bars have been absolutely freezing and at times it has felt that my hands are sticking to the bars – it is not easy and at times extremely hard to do, however having started at 40 seconds and have now managed a PB of 1 minute 54…….but because of the festive break this has dropped off again, but I am still getting between 1 minute 03 and 1 minute 24 and’ll take that!!!!. It’s one main goal that I set myself and I’d like to get there – even if I only managed a couple of pull ups I’d be happy. A video came up on instagram, as they do,(courtesy of somerfitcoaching), of a woman in her 80’s who has been doing pull ups and I thought how impressive (and not just because she is 80), she must have been keeping mobile as it is very obvious she has a good core and she appears to be very fit. But this is the key – just keep moving, keep doing things. I know I have said this multiple times in previous posts but it is so true just because we age we shouldn’t stop moving – this lady clearly has kept going – whether that is going to the gym or just going for a walk – it’s all about keeping some kind of movement.

This lady is pretty impressive and I’m sure puts a lot of us to shame!! But she is proof of what can be done. That said this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and not what everyone would aspire too – but I guess it makes you think a wee bit, definitely makes me think what I don’t want to be like.
