One thing I have noticed even more since turning 60 – it seems age has become a big deal again. Remember when you were young and you wanted to be in your teens – but “you are too young” – even when you got into your teens sometimes you still got a similar response – until you hit 18 – adulthood (allegedly). But age, for me anyway, didn’t really have too much of an impact between about 18/30 – I felt it a bit when I hit 30 but it wasn’t really an issue until I started getting closer to being 60 – then the “you’ll be over the hill soon“, “once you get your bus pass…….“are you doing that at your age” questions/statements began. You don’t suddenly become incapacitated because you turned 60. Obviously I can’t do what I did in my teens or even up to my 40’s (possibly!!) but I am not decrepit – to be honest in some cases I can still probably do more than a lot of people younger than me and that includes workouts in the gym!
So what’s the big deal with age – why does it become an issue when you hit those certain age milestones? It seems that you are categorized by your age – “you should have done this by now” or “should be here by now” – but who says that these are correct? Who makes these decisions? So much has changed over the years, being 60 now is definitely nothing in comparison to being 60 thirty to forty years ago (changing times). These two links came up on my instagram (convinced my phone/alexa listens to me ha ha!!!) but found both of these really interesting and it just goes to show – it doesn’t matter your age it’s how you deal with it (both of these are public on instagram and although the first is also a shopping site – I am not promoting this by the way!!! – but still thought it was interesting info about the founder and their manifesto).
What I also noticed is the amount of things online for over 40’s/50’s/60’s – ranging from health tips /body changes/what should have been accomplished?/children/jobs/how to look more attractive (??????) (because obviously once you reach that certain age you are not aware of any of these anymore….apparently). Also, it seems you need to start thinking about retiring when you get to your 60’s – really!!!! Why should you not be able to work longer if you are capable?? Why should you not be able to do a lot of things come to think of it!! We still have a life, lived experiences, things we have learned. Do we have a cut off date when we reach a certain age – no matter what that age is? I don’t believe we do and believe we should keep going and doing things as long as we possibly can – yes we may only have one life but it’s what we do with that life!!
